Visitor Guide

Where to Stay Near Inch Island

From cosy Airbnbs on the island to hotels in Buncrana and Derry. Everything you need to plan your accommodation.

Inch Island itself is a quiet, largely residential island with limited accommodation options. Most visitors stay in the surrounding villages of Fahan, Burt, or Buncrana—all within 15 minutes of the island—or in Derry city, just 20 minutes away.

This guide covers your options from most secluded to most convenient.

On Inch Island

Accommodation directly on Inch Island is limited, but what's available offers a unique experience.

Location-wise, it's perfectly positioned: halfway between Buncrana and Derry, a 1-hour drive to Glenveagh National Park, and right next to Wild Ireland sanctuary.

The Library — A Book-Lover's Retreat

The Library is a unique one-bedroom guest suite in the basement of a 17th-century farmhouse at Moress Farm. Described as reminiscent of "a Hobbit hole," it's perfect for couples seeking a quiet literary escape.

The property features a curated book collection, kitchen, living area, and master bedroom. It's been featured in The Irish Road Trip as one of Ireland's most unique Airbnbs. Two beaches are a short walk away.

Holiday Cottages

Several holiday homes are available through Donegal Holiday Cottages. These self-catering properties are ideal for families or groups wanting to immerse themselves in island life. Book early during summer months as options are limited.

Fahan & Burt (5-10 minutes)

The villages of Fahan and Burt sit just across the causeway from Inch Island, offering the closest mainland accommodation.

An Grianan Hotel

The An Grianan Hotel is a 43-bedroom hotel in the village of Burt, set in the Donegal countryside with views toward the Inishowen hills. It's known for warm hospitality and makes a good base for exploring both Inch Island and the wider Inishowen peninsula.

The hotel offers free Wi-Fi and parking. It's particularly convenient if you're visiting the nearby Grianán of Aileach ring fort (10 minutes away).

Holiday Homes

The Fahan area has several holiday rental options:

  • Castle View — A modern 3-bedroom holiday home near Inch Island's southern shores
  • Scalp Mountain cabins — Hot tub cabins between Derry and Buncrana with views over Inch Island, Burt Castle, and Lough Swilly

About Fahan

Fahan itself is a small village 8 miles from Derry, sitting on Lough Swilly's eastern shore. It has several good restaurants (including the well-regarded Restaurant 1826 and Treehouse in nearby Muff) and makes an excellent touring base. The beach at nearby Lisfannon is a short drive away.

Buncrana (15 minutes)

Buncrana is Inishowen's main town and has the most accommodation options in the area. It's 15 minutes north of Inch Island along the scenic Lough Swilly coast road.

For a more personal experience, try:

  • Town Clock Guesthouse — Located on Upper Main Street

Note that Buncrana has limited hotel capacity, so book ahead during peak summer months or bank holiday weekends.

Derry City (20 minutes)

If you prefer city amenities or are arriving late, Derry is just 20 minutes from Inch Island and offers the widest range of accommodation.

The historic walled city has hotels at all price points, from budget chains to boutique options. Major hotel brands include Maldron, City Hotel, and Bishop's Gate. Derry also has extensive Airbnb options.

Advantages of staying in Derry:

  • More restaurant and nightlife options
  • Better public transport connections
  • Easier late-night arrivals

The trade-off: You lose the rural atmosphere and need to drive to Inch Island each day.

Camping & Glamping

Caravan Parks

The closest caravan and camping park is Binion Bay in Clonmany (about 25 minutes north of Inch Island). It offers unobstructed views of the Inishowen hills and is well-positioned for exploring the peninsula.

For a more scenic option, Knockalla Caravan & Camping Park in Portsalon sits on Ballymastocker Bay—voted one of the world's most beautiful beaches. It's about 40 minutes from Inch Island but worth the drive.

See Go Visit Donegal's camping guide for more options.

Glamping

Castleforward near Burt offers glamping pods surrounded by dry stone walls and rolling fields—a peaceful retreat close to Inch Island.

Wild Camping

Wild camping is generally tolerated in remote areas of Donegal, provided you follow Leave No Trace principles and seek landowner permission where possible. Motorhome users report few issues around the Inishowen peninsula.
